Qigong supports post COVID and long COVID rehabilitation

Qigong, an ancient Chinese practice characterised by gentle movements, controlled breathing, and meditative elements, is suitable to support COVID recovery.

Worldwide focus is increasing on well researched holistic strategies for addressing the challenges posed by COVID and long COVID. The lastest literature identifies that across the spectrum of COVID severity, individuals engaging in qigong practice exhibited notable improvement in both physical and psychological wellbeing, evidenced by reduced respiratory symptoms and anxiety levels, enhanced sleep quality, bolstered mental wellbeing, and greater health-related quality of life. Qigong training has beneficial effects on long COVID symptoms, encompassing persistent respiratory issues, dizziness, sleep disturbances, and compromised health.

The analysis found that Ba Duan Jin and Liu Zi Jue which include breathing exercises, were particularly effective in promoting physical and psychological wellbeing during recovery from both acute and prolonged phases of the disease. A minimum of 20 min per day, up to a maximum of 60 min, is deemed necessary for optimal therapeutic effects. For COVID recovery, even a week of regular practice may yield noticeable benefits, while for long-COVID, at least 1 month practice is recommended to experience more substantial improvements.
